jUCy

Finally a new Version again.

And its one I am really proud of. Not primarily because of the new features and the new style (new splashscreen.. new Icons). Mainly its maturity.

Specially problems with reconnecting to hubs that seemed to have failed sometimes are now a problem of the past. Also some improvements to the Mac OS X GUI have been done. The not functioning menu items now work there. Also the Mac version has now a trayicon too. 

All in all a lot of improvements towards the goal of having a mature client have been done. Thats the reason for the new 7 in front of the version number.   

Also I would like to announce a new Plugin. The "Countrys" plugin. It allows you wo show little flags in chat and in Transfers View. Also this adds a new column in the nicklist to tell you from which city users are. Though be aware.. the database for the ip lookup is rather large (20MiB) so its a large plugin.

 

Though there are some negative sides.. some goals have not been reached. ADCS is still on the todo-list. Also ZPipe implementation showed problems with a tested hub and is therefore disabled.

About the new ueber cool looking splash screen that was created for me by Fox. Stupidly splashscreens are nothing that is updateable. If you want to see it, the only chance to get it is not to use the update function, but redownload jUCy *sight*. 

Though thats minor problems. Mainly I am now happy to release the most stable jUCy version ever right before Christmas.

- PM windows load Text of last chat on opening. (If logging was enabled)
- MacOSX: Correction of behaviour with Preferences and Exit in application menu.
- Log messages no longer go to text files but are now stored in the database. Log directory is obsolete.
- Search now uses native search widget, if that is available on your OS.
- Automatic search for alternatives implemented.
- Fixed Bug: Error Dialog shown when Image URL clicked did not contain an image. Now the URL is opened in the browser if showing within jUCy fails.
- Pugin Search Spy: Bad colours on Windows for Search Spy Icon in View Menu fixed.
- Now its possible to give nicks in chat a different colour/font for own nick, operator nicks, and favourite users' nicks.
- New plugin available: "Countrys" allows you to show flags to users in mainchat (if jUCy knows the IP of the other) though be aware the database needed for this is about 20 MiB in size so this plugin is large.
- Possibility to disable contributions of the plugins. (Text Modifications like Smileys or table columns and table column decorations like Country plugin has them. Found under Preferences -> Appearance)
- Messages received over UDP will now also make use of overridden charset in the hub.
- Smiley Plugin: Now much more smileys available by default. Thanks to arj!
- Fixed Bug: Priorities in DownloadQueue were not persisted.
- Fixed Bug: Positively resolved DNS addresses were cached too long. Which may have made it impossible to reconnect to a hub after an IP change
- Fixed Bug: Reconnects/automatic reconnecting to hub sometimes not working.

This month there won't be any jUCy release. That is not only because I have a lot to do... more important reason is that I made several large changes and plan to do some more. The negative effect of large changes is a larger number of bugs as a result. And currently the bug count seems not to converge. What means that releasing now would just result in a unstable version (more unstable than usual).

Though I am optimistic that for next month there will be a release with lots of new stuff... Just to tease you what is already done is:

- Native Seearch Widgets are now used in search windows (if the OS supports it)

- Nick colouring in Mainchat (colour self,Ops or Favourits differently)

- A Plugin that will show little flags to users so you can see where others are from. 

 

And some bugfixes to older problems. Things I still hope to do are ZPipe and ADCS  support (preparations for these resulted in the large changes named above) among some other things...

Quicksilver

Today I added a donation Button on the left side of the page. The thought behind that is that may be I can finance my server here with this so this hobby pays itself. I like this approach more than adding advertisements even if that seems to be the more common approach.

I hope nobody feels repelled by that button. Its just for those that want to give something to a poor student or have to much money (better give it to me than to a bank: equal value for you, but more value for me). If you decide to pet a cat instead I will be equally happy. 

Also don't forget to make feature requests in the phorum. This is of course independent from donations. I am happy to hear any idea for improvement. Though currently development has slowed down as semester has started again so please be patient.

With Version 0.64 some little improvements get into UC. Some little feature requests ... like possibility to colour UC. (no restart required to see new colours).

Also interesting for Russian people is that now default charset can be overridden ( FavHubs -> Properties -> Advanced). Which is commonly used in Russian NMDC hubs to conquer the lack of russian characters in windows-1252.

 

Some bugfixes. Problems loading images for fileendings on Mac should be solved (also happened sometimes under Linux).

Some usability improvements: Hovering over a transfer will now show the full path of the file that is being transferred.

Also now image-URLs posted in mainchat can be clicked and jUCy will load and show them without the need for a browser..

And additional there is a new Plugin that will replace smileys in Chat with little images. Not really a usability improvement but some people like it. If you want more kinds of smileys well talk to me in the forum. May be I missed some important smiley. 

 As it has often been requested jUCy has become open source though I yet can't make my mind up for a licence. I just say for now its open source, though not free software. In the meaning you are allowed to look at the source, though I don't explicitly allow reusing it (If you are a dev and want to use some of the source.. well contact me I am sure we find a solution.).

- Search Editor improvements (Search only OP-hubs and only user with free slots were not implemented, order of hubs is now the same as in FavHubs)
- A Plugin that shows graphical smileys is now available
- Hovering over transfers shows now additional info. (Full path to file, Stats on stuff left in Queue for user)
- Image URLs get now some glasses icon after them. Clicking on that icon will show the image within jUCy.
- Correction to FavHubs .. they were only stored permanently if the FavHubs window was closed.
- Fixed image loading bug primarily happening on Mac, sometimes on Linux and next to never on Windows.
- Its now possible to override the default charset on a per hub basis. This can be used in Russian (or other non windows-1252) NMDC based hubs that often use a different codepage than its common in DC.
